Back then, comic heroes were a way to inspire people in times of war and social/financial struggles. People needed to believe in something to give them hope. Personally, I like the ideals bestowed on the heroes of that time, such as no killing. The heroes were held to incredibly high standards that many people tried hard to aspire toward. In fact, comic heroes and heroines represented the opposite of what they were facing each day, such as death, starvation, financial despair. Lee and Kirby did what they could to raise an entire generation out of a desperate situation and create an optimistic future that they could reach for.
