In 1962 Filmation began work on an animated sequel to the MGM classic Wizard Of Oz film with Judy Garland. Money was a problem, and Judy died in that time, so for her 1st major role, Judy’s eldest daughter Liza Minnelli was cast in her mom’s part as Dorothy Gale, duplicating her mom’s distinctive speaking voice. It sources mostly Baum’s 2nd & 3rd books. Judy’s friend & co-star Mickey Rooney is in it, so is Margaret Hamilton. This time she’s Aunt Em rather than the witch, then Paul Lynde, Miton Berle & many others.
Sammy Cahn & Jim Van Heusen composed a dozen songs. After 10 years in production the film was finally released in 1972. The file here is sourced from the restored DVD release. The DVD has lots of bonus stuff from the 2 tv releases not seen in the theatrical release.
In 1985 Return To Oz was also made as a sequel to the MGM Wizard Of Oz film, sourcing the same material, but is not a musical nor animated & is decidedly darker, exploring the psychology of sadness, loss & even gas-lighting.
