The ha’a, while having some limited basis in Hawaiian tradition, is largely a modern reinvention that was created because the University of Hawai’i’s football team was taking flak for appropriating the haka from the Māori, including the potential for legal action against them by the All Blacks, whose haka is performed with explicit permission from Māori tribes.
