They have to set so many new movies in the 1990’s because to keep it feeling real phones would interfere with everything in a plot if it were set in today’s time.
We had real phones in the 1990’s, they may not have been “smart” phones but we even had cell phones way back then. I was a gopher for a machine shop and they had a brick in the pick up truck I used for parts pick ups and deliveries.
