I ended up feeling sorry for Ed in this depiction. Growing up with a horrible, crazy, zealot mother like that broke him. It left me with a disturbed feeling overall but I guess that was the point. The addition of some historical background - Perkins, Hitchcock, desensitization from the Holocaust, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. - was a good touch. Tragically, monsters are usually made, not born.
