I’m sure the movie switching aspect ratios frequently has some meaning, I just couldn’t figure it out.
Also, Benedict Cumberbatch doing a pseudo-southern American accent was a little weird. Don’t get me wrong, Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor, but I don’t see why you would cast him in a role that requires such a uniquely regional accent. Maybe American viewers don’t hear it as an accent, but as a Canadian, it is quite a glaring problem. They could have cast any number of actors who can pull that off, Matthew McConaughey comes to mind, or Tommy Lee Jones, if he’s still doing movies.
The story is great, and the actor who played Mohamedou was amazing. Jodie Foster was great too, though her age is showing in this one. I’ve heard Shailene Woodley is a good actress, but I can’t get over her role in the Divergent series. I know that probably wasn’t her fault, but sometimes first impressions are impossible to get over.
Overall, if you can get over some of the weird choices made in the movie, and actually keep up with the movie (it gets a little hard when they don’t explain or expand on what are in Mohamedou’s letters), there is an enjoyable experience in it, if not one that is a thought piece.
