certainly fits the zeitgeist of today. fun watch, especially the end.

i know nothing about the game or the story in general but this felt like nothing more than pointless pandering filler.

BladesofTroy 7 points 1 year ago.

Nope. Those characters are in the game and while it’s not directly said that they’re in a relationship when Ellie is looking around their house, in the game, she finds a gay porn mag with pages stuck together. Draw your own conclusions about that. It honestly sounds like it really bothers you that some people not traditionally given a place in popular media are being represented. this would suggest that it’s more about you than the show/episode.

Clever, witty, empathetic, extremely likeable cast. Segel and Ford play off each other seamlessly.

At this rate their will be a 100% chance of no season 2. The episodes are being made out of place. Story is confusing and no one knows what’s going on really. Its laughable. The potential in this show is very good but is currently being run by what it seems to be, 8 year old’s.

Given the way Apple+ has renewed Invasion 2 times, I wouldn’t count on it ;)

I first watched this in a theater in Wellington when it was released and sobbed throughout. It’s harrowing but brilliant. The film and its actors won dozens of awards around the globe and it’s still one of the best films to come out of Aotearoa. Holds it’s own 20+ years later! A cult classic. 10/10

Remember when cloaking Federation ships was illegal? …. and now we Discover …. it isn’t all of a sudden. This series is a melting pot of bad jokes and puns just waiting in the wings.

Destroy the franchise til it’s no longer what it was …. check.

Euringer 7 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Cloaking was never illegal in the Federation, they didn’t use them because of a treaty with Romulus. The treaty was already violated and seemingly abandoned by DS9 in the wake of the Dominion War.

I don’t really care if most of the “theories” get debunked, I still love this show. It’s a great distraction from the real world which can be so stressful. Sometimes I listen to the episodes in background before falling asleep; the narrator’s voice is soothing 💤

Landscapers (2021)
DoobieKeebler 7 points 2 years ago.

This was a good show. It had fantastic acting from Olivia Coleman, who has the range to go from an incredibly sweet character who you would wish was your mom, to manic and frantic, to straight up bizarre - al in one scene, with only maybe 1 cut (if that). David Thewlis puts in another great performance as Coleman’s human who is trying to protect his, “fragile,” wife. And finally, Dipo Ola puts in a humanizing performance as Coleman’s lawyer, while Samuel Anderson added a bit of comic relief as a DCI - what Americans would call a detective.

But you know a show and the actors are doing their job to humanize the leads, when you already know the outcome (the show makes the outcome very clear from the beginning, as the mini-series is a re-enactment of a true story that took place in Mansfield, England), but you sort of wish n the back of your head that they are innocent.

Definitely recommend it. It can get a bit weird at times, but I think that complete sense, given the material that inspired the mini-series.

I can’t believe HBO decided to cancel show when it was praised by fans and critics. I actually just saw that the showrunners were excited to start 2nd season and even had plans of what the new United States would look like. They really screwed themselves because I can totally see another platform picking this up and it be a bigger hit.

This show could regain its former glory right now if they would just fire Colin Jost and Michael Che. Worst SNL head writers ever….been watching non-stop since 1988, been there through thick and thin, even when everyone was always dogging on any given new cast that came along!! This is different. This is truly terrible. I realize now that the only reason this show has been allowed to endure for so long, is not because it is what it is, but only because it’s on so late at night. I’m not putting the blame solely on Jost and Che, everyone’s at fault here, but, c’mon, did you actually SEE the “Louisiana Liberal” sketch at the beginning of season 44?? ANYONE who actually thought that was funny enough to be viewed by a living soul deserves to have all confidence in them removed forthwith!! A group of so-called “educated” people sat around a table and decided that would be funny enough for you. The American public should be insulted that they expect us to laugh. Come back to me SNL, I miss you.

jedi0n 7 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Colin Jost and Michael Che are some of the only ones holding this show together. 99% of the skits on this show are not funny in the slightest. The 1 skit that is on every show, where these two aforementioned comedians play a couple of hosts in a news casting, are one of the only times I find myself still chuckling.

Jenkins herself said he was based on Trump.

Themoo 7 points 3 years ago.

What Jenkins said:

“[Donald Trump is] one of [the inspirations],” Jenkins explains, although she stressed that it is not meant to be a political statement. “The funny thing is like, he is [an influence], but I’m not trying to make [a point]. Even we have the president in this movie, and I’ve gone out of my way not to make it look like Ronald Reagan. I don’t want to get political. It’s not about political. Actually, a huge influence of this movie was also Madoff. And so what I was looking at was, those young Madoff story [sic] fascinates me, because I’m like, ‘How do you end up being Bernie Madoff?’”

I’ll take huge influence over “one of” , and as we saw on screen, it certainly fit her statement.

So hope this is actually a Sci-fi space adventure kinda show that Star Trek used to be rather than the ‘Let’s have a deep dive into the inner emotional turmoil of superfluous characters/subjects to show that even a toaster has feelings’ that Discovery seems to of become.

Yes, I’m aware, but there is not a Spock type character on the crew or main cast.

BubbaPharm.com 7 points 2 years ago.

Spock was funnier, wiser and more interesting than any character in Star Trek Discovery. Kirk using him as his foil resulted in some of those classic eyebrow raising moments. His observations on humanity tended to show deep ironies between our principles and what we actually do. There is nothing like that here.

This makes the 4th big budget female assassin movie that came out just this year. Gunpowder Milkshake, Black Widow, the Protege and now this. All have A-list actors with same revenge plot and protagonist having to deal with tragic past that led them to kill. The stereotypical tropes became painfully obvious seeing how they came out so close together. Having said that, I actually enjoyed this more than those I mentioned because of the setting, stylish cinematography and being a huge fan of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson. Very entertaining with great action, but nothing new.

Found myself surprisingly hooked - If you like ‘Number 9’ or ‘Spaced’ you’ll enjoy this. Personally, even though just a small bit part, the guy who played the club manager was great! Takes skill to play someone as clueless as that without it seeming wooden or poorly scripted.

well, by nature screen adaptations will be different than the book reading experience. If one remembers that to start with they may not be so mad at the end of the movie. That said, this saga has GOT potential, in story, violence, torture, you name it.

Halloween with the New Addams Family (1977)
syndromezed 7 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This is one of those things that hurts my heart, like the 60s Three Stooges.

In all of them, I want them to be funny but they need to be faithful to the original material. The 60s Stooges tried really hard but Moe and Larry were too old (and Curly and Shemp gone) to do the kind of slapstick they used to do, so those were more like throwbacks to 40s musicals. This Addams Family TV movie had the same problem - the actors were there, basically, but the writers didn’t seem familiar with the original shows (or comics). So they shoehorned the Addamses into a late-70s sitcom script. I mean, there was nothing about the Addams Fam that would have included Chippendales dancers in disco Speedos (that shiny gold/silver fabric). This show should have been made as “A Three’s Company Halloween” instead. Heck, the 90s (IIRC) movies were spot-on Addams Family even though the actors were different (and Christina Ricci was good enough to have had a Wed Addams spinoff :) ).

And seeing the actors I loved resorting to this kind of stuff, knowing that it’s because even the most popular actors in the mid-20th century didn’t make a whole lot off their work (IMO The Stooges should have been set for life) is just heartbreaking. :(

Stillwater (2021)
Sullyf 7 points 2 years ago.

Actually, those who expected Jason Bourne were disappointed, understandably. Though this was not a Bourne film. Damon plays a rigid shitkicking redneck asshole who travels to a country where he doesn’t speak the language, all the while trying to get his daughter out of jail. I loved this film because all the while he was helping his daughter, he had to adjust his own life to live in France. Becoming a father figure to another young girl, falling in love. He did things to help her get out while knowing some things were off. A fathers love. What would you do? 8/10

Ghosts (2021)
etim 5 points 2 years ago.

Yeah, I agree. The 1st two eps felt forced, clumsy. The funny parts seemed to only be what they copied straight from the Brit version. The US’s writing and gags often fell flat. Hopefully it was just an initial awkwardness, like some shows’ intro eps are but I ain’t expecting too much, it being CBS and all. I’ll give it another ep or two, see if it gets any better.

Boraes 7 points 2 years ago.

They did the same thing with Red Dwarf - Took a really popular funny and clever BBC program and make it ‘American’ it just felt like a slapstick sitcom. Will watch these later and see how it goes…
