TV Show:
The Old Grey Whistle Test
( 1971 )
The Old Grey Whistle Test is a variety music show that aired on BBC 2.The show's focus on "serious" rock music, rather than chart hits covered on BBC1 by Top of the Pops, was emphasised by a lack of showbiz glitter: bands would often perform their songs in front of either the bare studio walls or plain wooden boards (actually the backs of set walls from other programmes filmed in the same studio). The programme hosted many seminal acts of the era, including the first British TV performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers as well as then little-known acts of whom any early footage is now considered precious, such as Billy Joel, Judas Priest (with a long haired Rob Halford), Wishbone Ash, Judee Sill, Heart, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.Whistle Test was also the British television debut of the American glam punk band New York Dolls. Although host Bob Harris derided the group as "mock rock," comparing them unfavourably to The Rolling Stones, their performance influenced the following punk rock scene such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash as well as alternative bands like R.E.M. and The Smiths and the glam metal scene of the 1980s.

Friday on My Mind
( 2017 )
In 1964 when five young newly arrived immigrants met in a Sydney migrant hostel and formed a garage band, little did they know that they would take Australian rock 'n' roll to the world. This is the story of The Easybeats.Friday on My Mind is more than a classic rags to riches tale. It is a story of identity, reinvention and belonging with a powerful contemporary relevance. The series tells the story of five disparate immigrant boys who band together with an equally talented young visionary from the top end of town to create Australia's first truly international rock group, The Easybeats. Interwoven with a killer soundtrack, the series touches on themes of celebrity and redemption. While it was a wild ride being rock stars in the swinging sixties, the talented musicians struggled with holding on to their sense of self in their pursuit of riches and stardom, and were forced to confront the loss of identity that comes with overwhelming fame and living in a foreign land. Ultimately, it was through their groundbreaking music that they found themselves at home and discovered they were essentially Australian. They belonged.

Top of the Pops
( 1964 )
Top of the Pops is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC1, except for a short period on Fridays in late 1974, before being again moved to Fridays in 1996, and then to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart. Additionally, there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day (and usually, until 1984, a second such edition a few days after Christmas), featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year.

Movie:
White Rooms and Imaginary Westerns
( 2015 )
White Rooms and Imaginary Westerns is an impressionistic journey through the life and career of Pete Brown, songwriter, poet, singer, bandleader, record producer and (originally encouraged by Martin Scorsese's love of his lyrics) screenwriter. It is about youth, age, success, failure, mortality and perseverance. Touching on Brown's wartime and postwar childhood, and his second generation Jewish immigrant roots, the film explores the social and political backgrounds which stimulated the development of this groundbreaking artist and performer. Partly responsible for the sale of 35 million + albums, Brown as a rock poet is thought by some to be in close company to Bob Dylan in chronicling the post war/60's era, but his horizons have continued to expand beyond music and lyrics. The film boasts a stellar cast, both pro- and anti- Brown, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce (in his last major filmed interview), Ginger Baker, Martin Scorsese, Arthur Brown, Robert Wyatt, and Fay Weldon. Director Mark AJ Waters (Brown's regular screenwriting partner) respectfully depicts the events, imagery and culture that he was not a part of, but from which he and many of his contemporaries drew considerable inspiration. WRIW is more than a rock documentary, as its subject is not only a musician; it crosses as many boundaries as Brown himself does. It is a fast moving and entertaining portrait of an intriguing and often limelight-shunning personality, still a creative force in his mid-70s.
