They also will witness the lynching of runaway black slaves. Filled with dreams of war glory, they will nevertheless push ahead toward their destination. Their trek eastward is eventful and fraught with dangers, as the Texans will occasionally get into trouble with the townsfolk from various towns. Although they do eventually join the Confederate forces, it will happen in Shiloh, Tennessee not in Richmond, Virginia as planned. After becoming soldiers, they realize that war is not what they expected or dreamed about. The army and the war are not at all compatible with the core human values of ordinary Texans. The battle of Shiloh is the epitaph of this story.

On arrival at the POW camp Stalag 7A, Brooks and other fellow POWs are sent to work at the local Munich zoo, to care for the animals.Brooks is assigned to care for Lucy the elephant.The German caretaker in charge of Lucy is asked to train Brooks in his new job.At first, Brooks hates the assignment, considering the large amount of animal waste to be cleaned daily.However, he eventually becomes attached to Lucy the elephant.After a devastating bombing raid that kills some of the animals and zoo staff it is decided to evacuate the surviving animals.Lucy is scheduled to be transported by train to Innsbruck, Austria.On the departure day, the train is commandeered by a moody SS Colonel, for his troops.The colonel jokes that Brooks can walk the elephant all the way to Austria, if he wishes.The joke gives Brooks the idea of walking the elephant to Austria, with two armed guards and a Polish maid as cook.The Munich Zoo director, worried for Lucy's safety, agrees to evacuate her and send her to Austria on foot.Two soldiers provide the armed guard.One is Willy,a friendly Austrian soldier, and the other is Kurt,a brutal German soldier who gets drunk often, insults everyone and threatens to shoot the elephant.The group leaves Munich on a sunny day but the voyage to Austria isn't a promenade in the park when they start running into trouble.

Uncle Frank hires profession killer Harry Crown (Richard Harris) and pays him 100 G's to rub out Big Eddie, and the latter sends for Marvin "Claw" Zuckerman (Chuck Connors), a sadistic and demented killer, who is one hand short of having two hands. And Marvin hates Harry because it was Harry who cut off his hand when Marvin savagely mistreated a girl. In between all the blood and bullets, there is time for romance. Harry resumes an affair with Buffy (Ann Turkel), a third-grade schoolteacher (school-class status and not a rating), and Tony (David Hall), a hotshot young gangster assigned by Uncle Frank to assist Harry, becomes involved with Baby ((Katheine Baumann), an innocent-looking young hooker. Baby works at a most unusual whorehouse, "Dolly's Incorporated", which is located high above the city in a skyscraper, and ran by Dolly (Constance Ford). Harry and Tony rescue Baby from the clutches of Marvin, the one-hand mobster, and it is love at first sight for Tony. But the deplorable Marvin kidnaps Baby when she goes back to Dolly's to collect her things. Harry and Tony go to visit Buffy at her school, where they discover that evil Marvin has kidnapped Buffy, leaving a battered, bound-and-gagged and tied to a chair Baby in her place. Marvin believes in the take-one-leave-one bartering system. Tony reaches for Baby but Harry stops him. Baby is a booby-trap wired with dynamite. Harry carefully undoes the wires and they get all the kids out before the room blows sky high. Now, heroic Harry and clueless Tony set out to rescue Buffy.

Finchhaven's ghostly status is revealed and Lt. Krim and Jennifer help him to sink a Japanese cruiser.
