I want to have liked this more than I did. It comes so close to being really good! The acting is decent, quite good by horror movie standards. People keep saying it’s “original.” I guess that’s true, in a very limited sense. The way it draws on conspiracy theories about the Bohemian Grove was clever. Otherwise, it’s just a novel arrangement of exhausted tropes. There are moments it feels like it could break through into some next-level Cronenberg-esque insanity, but it never does. It doesn’t crash and burn in a spectacular fashion, either. It just kind of hovers until the credits roll. It tries to lampoon 70s era talk shows but comes off more mid-80s or early 90s, and I think therein lies the secret to what’s really going on in this movie. Overall, it feels like it would have been a great episode of Creepshow.
