Agree that the recent series have lost that episodic nature that made them so enjoyable and a show that people can just watch any random episode from any series and not need to remember a bunch of backstory. Yes there was a ‘kinda’ overarching story that was touched upon more or less in each series e.g Voyage being a trip home, DS:9 with the Dominion, Enterprise being about the first ship/crew, but it wasn’t used as a tool to detract from the actual sci fi brilliance.
Yeah exactly. OG Trek would usually dedicate a few episodes across a season to something specific. Like Seven of Nine and the Borg kids in Voyager had multiple episodes. Every other episode did it’s own thing. Maybe that’s not possible due to the fact that Nu Trek has way less episodes but this one felt clunky to me. They did a better job setting up the Gorn storyline in the last season.
