Filmed entirely in the People’s Republic of China, Factory Air challenges the idealization of global culture and explores disorientation and displacement in the migrant experience. Angelo’s family had likely lived in the same village for many centuries, before war and the scattered search for a livelihood forced their emigration. More recently, the impulse of wanderlust—a far-more-privileged reason for travel—is further impacting his family’s diaspora. With a nod to experimental filmmaker Chris Marker (Sans Soleil), Factory Air unravels the intercultural experience of travel in China through both a fictionalized and documentary narrative.
