This is one of the most ambitious sporting documentaries in Australian history. Filmed across four continents, it is an African boxing story with the rhythm and romance of When We Were Kings. The action is immense, but this also much more than just a sports film. It is the story of a man fighting out of poverty, and battling against the prejudices of a new homeland, while dedicating himself to achieving the implausible. Sakio Bika was born into nothing in Cameroon, and is now a proud Australian who fights under both flags on boxing’s biggest stages in the USA and across the world. He is a stunningly unorthodox fighter, who has forged a reputation as a wild brawler, fighting with determination and desire rather than polish and precision. Sakio’s journey in boxing has been as unforgiving as the path of his life - he has battled for every success, and strived relentlessly against all odds. The film visits the harsh streets of Sakio’s childhood in Douala, Cameroon and traces his journey via the 2000 Olympic Games to Sydney, Australia and a new life, wife and children. Some of the biggest names in world sport lend their voices to Sakio’s story - Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar de la Hoya, Roger Milla, Jeff Fenech and Joe Calzaghe are amongst those who have been interviewed for the film, expressing their admiration and intimate awareness of what he has achieved. The emotions around Sakio’s eventual success are overwhelming, yet this is where the documentary grasps one of it’s central queries - the African man has not been embraced in his new homeland. Why? The celebratory scenes in Cameroon give the film a colourful highpoint. A nation and a continent embraces it’s prodigal son, as he ponders his place in the world. Finally, the reality of his standing re-emerges and boxing’s power-brokers force Sakio to battle once more and defend his beloved belt in another seemingly impossible showdown. This final fight leads Sakio, and the film, to a familiar but unexpected place. |
