The film centers around his 1995 staging of one of his most beautiful and moving ballets Voluntaries (music by Poulenc) for Het Nationale Ballet in Amsterdam, but also offers excerpts from his other important works such as Field Figures, Ricercare, and Alice performed by the Royal Ballet (Nureyev), Nederlands Dance Theatre, and National Ballet of Canada.
