“The Gringas” is a highly subjective record of the filmmaker’s involvement with a family of American and German pagans who live in an old school bus parked permanently on a dirt field in Baja, Mexico. Lena is the teen-aged daughter who can move fluidly in either urban Los Angeles or rural Mexico, seemingly comfortable in her identity as a Mexican country girl, yet fully belongs neither here nor there. “The Gringas” is initially set around the planning of Lena’s quinceañera, and expands to encompass the challenges facing her family’s survival. Ultimately the question of her future becomes a love letter between Mexico and Norte America. |
