Self Inflicted explores the world of Non Suicidal Self Injury, a practice many adolescents and adults use to cope with distress, which is not currently listed as its own disorder in the DSM. Using personal narratives from those who tried self harming for a short while, and those who have used this coping mechanism for most of their life, Self Inflicted is the first film to present this issue in a non-sensationalistic way, using information from the top researchers on Non Suicidal Self Injury: Dr. Janis Whitlock, and Dr. Mitch Prinstein. The film also involves poetry, artwork, music, and photography from self harmers to highlight this incredibly widespread but hidden practice. |
