in 1989, acclaimed AfricAmerican novelist William Melvin Kelley acquired enough money to buy a video camera. He began taking motion pictures as a way to document and share visions that could not properly be described in words. As a friend and disciple of photojournalist Henri Cartier Bresson, Kelley began carrying the camera everywhere, and in the process created twin portraits of his Harlem neighborhood, and his way of raising an artistic family amid the beauty and danger present in a city stricken by the forces of crack, violence and landlord neglect. Today as gentrification transforms Harlem, Kelley’s rich voice looks back on his life and shares insights on how to survive amidst both beauty and loss. |
