Raymond Massey narrates this short documentary film produced by the U.S. Treasury Department. Depicted is the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, with the famous flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi by U.S. Marines and sailors. From the acclaimed photograph of the raising taken by Joe Rosenthal, sculptor Felix W. de Weldon creates a three-dimensional sculpture model, which then serves as the prototype for a larger statue which is installed at Quantico, Virginia, Marine Barracks. But de Weldon had a more ambitious plan, and with donations from citizens and Marines, he creates a 78-foot tall version of the statue and sees it installed at Arlington National Cemetery, where it stands as a memorial to all Marines who have died in the service of their country.
