Senkyo Fes! is a feature documentary following Yohei Miyake, an underground musician who ran in Japan’s Upper House election in summer 2013. With the slogan, ‘Campaigns are not battles, but festivals,’ Bob Marley-influenced Miyake defies the stereotypical image of a Japanese politician through 17-day campaign trail, adopting a unique campaigning style that mixed stump speeches with jazzy, experimental live performances. The public, particularly the younger generation, voiced their strong support on social media, and his guerrilla campaign stops came to bring hundreds of people together. Capturing the rise of new civil society leader, director Taiki Sugioka invites viewers to experience a Japan on the cusp of social change. |
