Struck by reckless paranoia and a disregard for Constitutional law, the United States government in the early l940s arrested thousands of Japanese Americans, and German and Italian documented immigrants or visitors the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor and in some cases, earlier. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the “Espionage Act”, giving the government wide powers to jail any person believed to be a threat to the United States.
