Darlene has been a rodeo girl since before she could walk. Her father Duke, raised her and her little brother Max in the “cowboy way”, and they both have an accumulation of blue ribbons and trophies to prove their mettle. Darlene’s specialty is barrel racing, but that’s only because nobody was ever insane enough to let her try riding a bucking bull. Duke knows she’s bound to try riding bulls the first chance she gets, so he decides to make it happen for her so he can control the situation and keep her as safe as possible, considering she’s liable to get her head caved in by the sharp hooves of a 1000 lb. angry beast. The day after Darlene is crowned Miss Caldecott County Rodeo Queen, she hangs up her tiara in favor of a safety helmet, and climbs on the back of a surly young bull named Hubris. With her girl/pack cheering her on, boyfriend Manny as her chute man and Duke on safety, she’s well supported. The first ride is just sort of disaster, but what would you expect? The amazing thing is to see Darlene get up from the dirt, and get on another bull. By the end of the day she’s teasing 8 seconds, that magic moment that separates winners and losers in the world of bull-riding. From this moment on, and you might as well go ahead and engrave the championship buckle with her name on it. There’s no turning back. As you might expect, not everybody is crazy about Darlene getting into bull riding. Her boyfriend’s father, Jesse, a ruthless, hard drinking cowboy, is willing to kill to keep her from riding. And then, there’s Dan Dermott, chairman of the West Rodeo Association. Not only does he think its insane to put a skinny gal on the back of bucking bull, he’s afraid that it would make a mockery of his rodeo venue, and cause all the circuit bull-riders to cancel out. He’ll try to stop Darlene by any means necessary. Nevertheless, Darlene’s going to ride, no matter what anybody thinks. Her family and friends rally together to support and train her. Her mom Marla calls up her wayward brother Blue, a world class rodeo clown, and he agrees to join their crew. Duke and Manny put Darlene through a grueling training routine to hone her reflexes, balance, and strength. Every day, she’s up at first light, and working long after the sun goes down. She has little time for play, but thankfully, Manny is with her all the way, kicking her butt through the training, and then rubbing her sore muscles and holding her tight at night. When the rodeo finally begins, she’s ready. Her skills are honed. Muscles toned. And she’s not alone. Not only will her family be rooting for her, but everybody in the stands will be recognizing her as the “Princess of the PBA.”
