Sasquatch Sunset (2024)

It is rated R for sexual content, frontal nudity, so I wouldn’t let kids watch this one. This movie reminds me of Clan of the Cave Bear although the plot is different. I’m not impressed with it. I wouldn’t watch it again and I don’t know what to say about watching it all the way through except once you see it, it’s kinda hard not to stop seeing it. However, it’s original and definitely different.

Classic. So many good actors/actresses in this one. So young, too. Ahhh… the 90’s. It’s a bit tragic, the story. But, that’s how the cookie crumbles. I love the ironic ending, though. 4/5✨

Humane (2024)
Hans Zarkov 2 points 12 days ago.

My suspension of disbelief does about as well as the old Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge did when the idea of controlled euthanasia of a large segment of the population is the major plot point - but only because of the “controlled” part. The reality is the wars that would be fought over the dwindling resources and/or the massacre of ecological refugees fleeing to places where it’s not as badly devastated is our version of population reduction. Or if it’s internal within a country, more like Soylent Green than The Road Warrior.

It’s more of a nitpick than showstopper for me though - some of my favorite SF stories are the ones where the authors come up with unique post-apocalyptic societies (not including “young adult” orientated stories where a single teenager changes the entire world order by being plucky and self-confident).

Tarot (2024)
Lazeistheman2 0 points 25 days ago.

Pretty decent movie, starring Ned Leeds, pretty good comedic actor.

Hans Zarkov 2 points 12 days ago.

I’ve been reading Tarot cards - the deck created by Alastair Crowley, as it happens - for over 30 years now and no one’s ever warned me about “the sacred rule of Tarot”, and the worst evil I’ve ever summoned was something that made my date pass out from drinking too much just before we slept together, once. Mildly annoying, but hardly unspeakable. ;) hehe

That said, I’m looking forward to a non-cam version. There haven’t been enough escapist “creature feature” type horror movies that don’t try and teach a very heavy-handed lesson. Abigail sort of fits the bill, but I’d rather have another Night at Willy’s (or whatever it was called, the Nick Cage vs. animatronic weasel movie), Alien, or Chucky movie, or maybe that great GEICO “when you’re in a horror movie you make stupid decisions” commercial made into a movie. That’d be fun. :)

Oh God, really? I genuinely thought there was another episode, it’s just a place holder until June 13. We have all held our breaths to see Penelope finally get some (love) and this is where they pause? What a vicious way to keep everyone tethered to the show. Damnnnnn…

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

I have little doubt that there were Nazi sympathizers throughout the war that would have eagerly surrendered to Germany, but given that the British Union of Fascists and National Socialists was proscribed by the British government following the outbreak of war and disbanded soon after, it seems unlikely that there would be many willing to voice those opinions publicly.

Euringer 2 points 12 days ago.

That is definitely a piece to the puzzle that is often ignored in basic modern history, but sometimes given a large presence in modern media, like how in America we had a few million card carrying fascists opposed to war with Germany on obvious grounds - doesn’t necessarily mean our government agreed with those people.

Aah fair enough, and it’s not semantics as it would have absolutely mattered if the people in the movie were telling him to surrender outright as opposed to a negociated peace treaty.

Not a surrender as such, but a negotiated peace settlement. If Halifax had succeeded Chamberlain instead of Churchill, things very likely would have gone in that direction.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024)
Piglet 1 points 12 days ago.

Starts next month! My how far Kevin Costner has come! In the movie The Big Chill, only his hands made it on screen. He was a bit green in the movie No Way Out, but many people took note of this fine-looking male actor. He soon learned and even in the 90’s his acting was still a bit green, and I sometimes think it’s because he really didn’t want to be in the movie, so his acting was so good.

Wasn’t there a big kerfuffle in 1940 about a bunch of Brits wanting to surrender?

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Boraes 1 points 12 days ago.

Shamelss use of the brand name to fill seats and make money. Kinda hard to be a Mad Max film without him… Just a post apocalyptic action film about female empowerment, which is cool, but that’s not Mad Max. Should own it as an original or actually have MM in it.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S5 E8
Boraes 4 points 13 days ago.

Book is such a pointless ancillary character now that’s just shoehorned into every episode. No reason to be in it until suddenly ‘O there just happens to be a familial kind of relationship with one of the people they’re chasing’. ‘Oh this place just happens to have an artefact from their world’. His only function is to be the Capts love interest so we can have those lovely long story detracting conversations about feelings and tense pauses. The show seems solely focused on them as the only people who ever undertake away missions. At least all other series mixed it up more with who was the episodes main charcaters.

ct451 2 points 12 days ago.

I think by this point the writers know the series is cancelled so they grab whatever character is easiest and go. They tried a bit of character development with some of the crew but there’s no point really.

Was really enjoying them film for the ‘Inglorious Bastards Vibe’ right up until the scene where apparently all senior military commanders and civil servants were telling church hill to surrender to Hitler ‘because he has more troops and bombs’. My grandfather was a fighter + bomber pilot, who also taught a lot those young pilots who died in the Battle of Britain when an monstrously huge Luftwaffe got bitch slapped by much much smaller RAF. Artistic licence is one thing but that’s an utter insult. No Brit during WWII would EVER say to surrender especially the high brass.

Aside from being a great director, what I like about Guy Richie’s classics are the interesting and complicated characters. Instead, this movie is yet another cartoonish WWII good vs evil story with one dimensional characters.

Flowers for Algernon (2000)
Birdsforme 4 points 13 days ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This film was very well made for a tv film. The points made were that there are worse things than lack of intelligence; a higher intelligence does not create emotional maturity; for scientific advancement ethics are often put aside; and its really not very smart to be a bully. Albino mice were created in the 1920s and are all descendants of lab mice.
Many touching scenes in this film along with some tear jerking moments. Well worth the watch.
