Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S3 E4

You don’t know how Pike’s story line pans out? Have you not watched any of the other Star Treks? Seems like they go through that in every one. Can’t remember — maybe in Discovery or Picard — they showed exactly what happened to Pike in detail.

Oh, I know, just want to see how they do it here with this show.

AmieWarren 5 points 4 months ago.

Or PERHAPS it’s just not your cup of tea. I think it’s fun, simpler and less exciting perhaps, but it fits into its timeline and what that would be like. Star Trek is a progression — not counting the original of course — of technology and humanity. It portrays how humans were and how they evolve. I love that.

I think they did a really good job of throwing in tons of Meta stuff from behind the scenes of producing hundreds of episodes of the franchise. I loved that they ripped Shatner a new one for all his notorious bs. The real time non holodeck stuff was pretty rough around the edges. I’m sure tons of folks will flock to the comments to berate the show because it pats itself on the back for all it’s work in inclusivity, diversity and political storylines.

I think overall I’m just not feeling the constant Spock love triangles that undo all of the Vulcan traditional/cultural stuff about public displays of affection and mating that were established in Enterprise and Disco. By the time this show is over he will have had what 4 love interests?

AmieWarren 2 points 4 months ago.

I like that, because it shows how a young Spock, all full of sexual energy, would act. As he aged through the various series, he became more mature and not as — if I can say it — horny and willing to get involved with anyone. This shows a Spock just looking for love in all the wrong places.

I kinda liked this. Wasn’t sure at first, the way it started, then when I clicked it was a holodeck episode, I started to get it. Experimental phase. Kinda cool in a way, but really wish they would stay with the Pike story line, really want to see how that is going to pan out.

And that’s what it was supposed to be — silliness. But I understand. I hate it when they turn episodes into musicals on any show. I refuse to watch them, because I don’t like musicals. Evidently, you don’t like silliness and that’s o.k.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S3 E4
AmieWarren 3 points 4 months ago*.

I love this — just crazy, stupid fun, like the Dukes of Hazzard was. I feel sorry for people who can’t just let go and enjoy this kind of stuff, but everyone is different. Now if they had turned it into a musical, I would have clicked out immediately. That never goes well, unless you love musicals, of course. Each to his own.
They had Captain Kirk down PAT!! So funny! Spock and La’An??? Brilliant!! Loving young Scotty — what a trip he is!
Thanks for pointing out the Easter eggs, because I didn’t know the backstory of the production of the original Star Trek, so I would never have noticed that one. I’m into the entertainment value, and I don’t get into the actors lives or what goes on behind the scenes, so I appreciate those who do so they can enlighten me.
No, this isn’t like the Star Treks further into the future, but it’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to be simpler, with simpler characters, like they would have been pre-Kirk. Just accept that and have fun with it, if you can. If not, please just stop watching and don’t ruin it for the rest of us with the constant criticism. Geez! Lighten up, people! It’s just a TV show!

Plato’s myth in “The Symposium” describes humans as originally androgynous beings later split in two by the gods, who now seek their “other half.”

“Across lifetimes, some souls are not searching—they are remembering. Drawn by invisible threads, they find each other again and again, proving that true connections are never lost to time.”

i was expecting Morpheus to greet her at the end. I thought when she was on the ground it would open up to him helping her up in her realm where ever the souls first enter. Like he was waiting to move on until she came back from her day. One last moment for them that the other Endless didn’t get since they seem to be the closest siblings. (oh shit, sleep brings you close to death. I just got that) . Oh well.

I liked it over all.

Jirido, I love how you “let your red flag fly.”

What if one episode the team from “Archer” comes looking for Archer? And, at the end Archer and Harry meet?

We should not let the AI bugs write the script! But, yes, they’ll be dogging a good job with the renders! I can see it!

Sorry you weren’t feelin’ it — I get the sentiment.
And, you win a chicken dinner! For the way Riker liked to sit down (another Easter egg).

I also found the opening a bit grating (and, another Easter egg was it’s trope of “The Adventures of Captain Proton” from ST Voyager) — I think.

I did get into it… got a thing for La’An.

Lucille Ball played by Number One… I think. Lucille Ball green-lit two shows after she was told it would necessitate selling the studio in two years or less (because even one would cost so much): Star Trek & Mission Impossible. She did it anyway because she thought they were That important.

It’s so fricken good! And the cast! Sad it had to end abruptly due to Phil Hartman being taken from us way too soon. I love that he was also the original voice of Troy McClure from the Simpsons!

They had to figure out some reason to split the characters up as the actress (Stana) had a huge problem with Nathan Fillion & was basically refusing to fill with him. Originally there was going to be another season after this one but there was just too big a rift.

An much better answer than me whining about my spiritual pains and uncomfortable a*al plug is an advice. When you look at movies and think.. Urff.. Why could they not better have.. Write it down. Humor, ideas, subjects, movie title and times. Whatever it is, jot it down!! Not necessarily very detailed, but just as a reminder that you can use to find the idea later. They grow you know..
I will try to write a post about how I see that we could build a support space for it on the forum.
For me it would be an natural extension of this space and a social thing where getting critique and support and jam away with ideas are a central part of it. In Finland where I live, the culture have traditionally been that you stoically toil away with your “battery invention” in your lonesome basement, to then present your creation ready and humbly and, with a look at the ceiling, claim that.. Well you don’t really care but are just happy if someone would have any good use for it.. While the truth is that the prospect of a future admiration is a grand, if not the central part of it. It is truly comical and could deserve a film of it’s own.
I see it rather like an evening jam done instead of looking at that boring last-choice movie I could do without. At least partly driven by the fun of doing and showing and interacting around film. Crude and direct but fun. And about the learning of creating cinematic drama. And saying the truth of the heart in an affordable way. But that is just my opinion on why and how. I guess that there is many views and ways.

BluRain 7 points 4 months ago.

You could start by asking people to cut a 5-minute video that is a captivating and creative summary of each episode of a series, then chain the summaries together in a thoughtful way to create a new series that shows an entirely new way of looking at the source material. It would be fascinating to see the different creative styles of different people summarizing the same source material.

Every time this subject comes up I get really angry because it makes me think of how differently the extremely similar Ken and Barbie murder case was treated. The media didn’t even seem to notice the obvious parallels between the cases! To me, there is zero difference between Hindley and Homolka and yet Homolka is currently a free woman, having been unconditionally released in 2005 after serving just 12 years in prison.

def worth a watch but it almost seems like this ws a low budget show that hired a bunch of low budget actors that cant act, then at the last min they got a backer with alot of money but decided to keep all of the low budget actors still. the acting is really bad but the story makes up for it. this could just end up being one of those shoes that didnt make much but end up having a cult following… take a chance, it gets pretty good.

so i probably saw this when it came out, and saw cassavetes’ gloria much later, not realising this one was a remake of it. it was just one of them 90’s films. the cassevettes with gena rowlands performance truly glorious. however, this version will always exist in me as that time that existed and i was there and there were better things than things like how we treat each other and what we say when we mean it.

Holy hell… this movie sucks dozens of bags of dicks. As if all these pathetic overblown style scenes were not squeezed in desperately enough the ending is literally screaming at you how this movie fuses incoherent scenes and styles into a giant mess in the most tonedeaf way possible. And when they have one idea they hammer you with those severed heads with spines still attached again and again until you are bored out of your mind and only wish for this franchise to be laid to rest for eternity.

This unlocked so many core memories. For a show that’s over 40 years old it still is relevant; it has stood the test of time.

Monkey Man (2024)
darthdirk -1 points 4 months ago.

Stunning movie. The first half admittedly has it lengths but when this picks up pace its pitch perfect. This movie is unexpectedly angry like a scream to rise up and its refreshing that it does not fall into the genre traps of secret service/disgruntled good cop/mafia killer/navy seals or whatever powerplay is usually involved in action movies like this.
Obviously John Wick comes to mind as this movie has incredible editing, cinematography , choreogaphy and music. But its not overdone to computer game leveleaesthetics … this feels much more real than most of the action bullshit we are served. The training sequences with the tabla player were awesome and they squeezed so many fresh ideas into this movie. The monks were very different and that bashing with a high heel was just lovely to watch.
This is pure anger for a bullshit system with no comedic relief and i love how it has no forgiveness for anyone. Let god sort them out. 10/10
